11 Things to Do in April in St. Pete-Clearwater
Your guide to fun things to do in Pinellas County in April
Looking for things to do in Clearwater-St. Pete in April? We’ve got you covered!
We are two born-and-raised Pinellas moms and we round up family-friendly activities to help other families in our area. This are all things we do with our own kids and we hope our lists inspire you to check new things with your families!
Below you’ll find fun April activities, like blueberry picking, minor league baseball opening games and the Dunedin highland games!
Things have officially warmed back up in April but not scorching yet so you’ll also find a fun mix of indoor and outdoor activities on this list. Things like seasonal splash pads start opening back up and you can still catch fun library activities before the summer slow down.
Let’s find some April fun!
1. Go blueberry picking
April is the start of blueberry picking season in Florida. There are many u-pick blueberry farms near us that are open in April and May.
Check out our list of U-pick Blueberry Farms Near Pinellas to find a farm to visit. Don’t forget sunscreen and to wear shoes that can get dirty!
2. Dunedin Highland Games
The Dunedin Highland Games usually take place the first weekend in April and celebrate Scottish games and activities. You can watch feats of strength, dancing and pipe bands at this family-friendly event.
You can find the schedule for the 2024 Highland Games on the city of Dunedin website. There’s a mix of free and pay events, plus a kids area and food throughout the weekend.
TIP: There’s a playground on site that we like for when our kids need a break from the festival (or when you want to eat or drink a beer in peace while they play).
3. Sugar Sand Festival
The Sugar Sand Festival is an amazing sand sculpting festival that takes place for two weeks in April at Clearwater Beach.
Malena was first turned on to this festival by her son’s preschool teacher who highly recommended it. They had an amazing time and now make it a yearly tradition.
At first glance the tickets seem a little pricey but we think it is cool enough to justify the cost. Check out the festival website for the schedule of events and to buy tickets in advance.
4. Visit a library event before summer
Our local libraries event calendars slow down during summer break so April is a great time to catch some library fun while they still have a full schedule. This is a good activity for those extra hot April days.
Not sure which library to visit? This list highlights our favorite Pinellas libraries for kids.
5. Tampa Bay Blues Festival
The Tampa Bay Blues Festival takes place in the middle of April down in Vinoy Park in St. Pete. The ticket price isn’t cheap but children 12 and under are free, which is a nice touch to make this a more affordable family-friendly event.
6. Visit HorsePower Farm
We love HorsePower farm and this year they are closing for the summer, so make a trip in April while they’re still open! The farm has play structures, trains to ride, multiple petting zoo areas and animals to visit.
We personally always visit when it is the special 1st Thursday of the month $5 tickets. It gets busy but the farm is big so there is enough space to spread out. It’s a blast and there’s enough to do that you could easily stay from opening to close.
Remember to fill out the waiver online before you go. We also recommend bringing cash because the credit card line can get long, and make sure you dress to get dirty.
7. Catch the solar eclipse
Mark your calendars for the total solar eclipse on April 8th. Florida won’t see 100% totality but can expect about 40-60% (source). Clearwater expects the eclipse peak at 3:00pm, with the whole eclipse taking place between 1:42-4:14pm (source).
Remember, you can’t look directly at a total solar eclipse because it can cause eye damage. Make sure any eye protection you use comes from a reputable source.
8. Go to a dog beach or dog park
April is a great time to head to a dog beach because it is warm enough to play in the water but not too hot to be outside. My toddlers love watching dogs run around dog parks so we love stopping by ones even without a dog.
Check out our list of dog parks and dog beaches in St. Pete-Clearwater to find one close to you.
9. Movies on the lawn
With the weather warming up, movies on the lawn events start popping up in April. You’ll find these events hosted by local parks and rec departments throughout Pinellas.
For example, Safety Harbor hosts a 1st Friday Flick at Waterfront Park and will be showing Encanto in April.
10. Cool off at a splash pad
Have you kids been missing their favorite splash pad during the winter months? The seasonal splash pads in Pinellas re-open in March and April so its a perfect time to visit.
Two of our favorite splash pads, the Kiwanis Sprayground in Dunedin and the Tarpon Springs splash park, both reopen in March and the Oldsmar Cyprus Forest Spray Park and Dell Holmes splash pad reopen in April.
Check out our list of all the great splash pads around Pinellas.
11. Minor League Baseball Opening
The Clearwater Threshers and Dunedin Blue Jays have their opening home games for the season in early April. We’re looking forward to going to the Thresher’s 1$ Tuesday nights this season. You can find more about the Threshers’ promotions here and the Blue Jay’s schedule here.
